Resumo O uso e os custos de produtos de madeira sólida estão diretamente ligados ao grau de qualidade da matéria-prima. O mercado moveleiro é exemplo disso, pois quanto melhor a qualidade superficial da madeira, maior será seu valor comercial. Conhecer o comportamento da madeira durante o processo de usinagem é um importante parâmetro para caracterizar e dar usos específicos para cada espécie. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a qualidade da superfície da madeira de clones de Toona ciliata M. Roemer var. australis, seus potenciais usos após o processo de usinagem e definir, entre os clones avaliados, o de melhor qualidade superficial. Para isso, foram selecionadas trinta e cinco árvores (7 clones x 5 repetições) de um plantio localizado na região sul de Minas Gerais, das quais retirou-se toras de 1m de comprimento (0,3 a1,3 m a partir da base), e posteriormente desdobrando-se em tábuas. A secagem ocorreu nas condições ambientais de sombra e ao ar livre, até atingir a umidade de equilíbrio. O processo de usinagem (plaina e desengrosso) das tábuas ocorreu nas velocidades de avanço de 6 m.min-1 e 30 m.min-1. As avaliações da qualidade da superfície ocorreram de forma visual, conforme a norma ASTM D-1666 (2011) e pelo ensaio de rugosidade da superfície. Constatou-se que, dentre os sete clones estudados, o de número 1 apresentou maior qualidade de superfície na usinagem e, de modo geral, com o aumento da velocidade de avanço, houve redução da qualidade da superfície.

Abstract The use and costs of solid wood products are directly linked to the quality of the feedstock. One example is the furniture market, the better the surface quality of the wood is, the greater its commercial value is. Knowing the behavior of wood during the machining process is an important parameter to characterize and give specific uses for each species. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the surface quality of wood from Toona ciliata M. Roemer var. australis clones, its potential uses after the machining process and to define, among the evaluated clones, the one with the best surface quality. Thus, thirty-five trees (7 clones x 5 repetitions) were selected from a plantation located in the southern region of Minas Gerais state, from which 1m long logs were removed (0.3 to 1.3 m from the base), and later unfolding on boards. Drying took place in the shade and outdoors, until equilibrium humidity was reached. The machining process (planer and thicknessing) of the boards took place at the forward speeds of 6 m.min-1 and 30 m.min-1. The evaluations of the surface quality took place visually, according to the ASTM D-1666 (2011) standard and by the surface roughness test. Among the seven clones studied, the number 1 presented higher surface quality in machining and, in general, with the increase in the forward speed, there was a reduction in surface quality.

RESUMO Esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento físico e mecânico de madeira laminada colada (MLC) de Hevea brasiliensis tratada com arseniato de cobre cromatado (CCA), borato de cobre cromatado (CCB) e piretróide na produção de MLC. As peças foram produzidas com três lâminas com dimensões de 60 x 20 x 1200 mm (largura x espessura x comprimento), unidas com adesivo epóxi sob 1,0 MPa de pressão durante 24h à temperatura ambiente. A madeira de seringueira tinha densidade aparente de 0,624 g cm-3, valor próximo ao da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis, espécie utilizada tradicionalmente na fabricação de MLC. Em relação às peças de MLC, observou-se que o tratamento preservativo com CCA e CCB influenciou nos valores das propriedades mecânicas. Para o módulo de ruptura (MOR), foi verificado redução de 75,44 MPa para 62,36 e 58,57 MPa para as peças sem tratamento e tratadas com CCA e CCB, respectivamente. Já para o tratamento superficial com piretróide não houve diferenças estatísticas. As fotomicrografias da linha de cola mostraram que a redução desses valores ocorreu sobretudo pela penetração das soluções preservativas na estrutura da madeira (lume celular, vasos ou poros), prejudicando a ancoragem do adesivo.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the physical and mechanical behavior of glued laminated timber (GLT) - glulam pieces of Hevea brasiliensis treated with chromed copper arsenate (CCA), chromed copper borate (CCB) and pyrethroid in the production of GLT. The pieces were produced using three wooden laminae with dimensions of 60 x 20 x 1200 mm, (width x thickness x length), joined with epoxy adhesive under 1.0 MPa pressure for 24h at room temperature. The rubberwood had an apparent density of 0.624 g cm-3, a value close to that of Eucalyptus grandis wood, a species traditionally used in the manufacture of GLT. Regarding the GLT parts, it was observed that the preservative treatment with CCA and CCB influenced negatively the values of the mechanical properties. For resistance modulus (MOR), a reduction of 75.44 MPa to 62.36 and 58.57 MPa was found for the parts untreated and treated with CCA and CCB, respectively. There was no statistical difference for surface treatment with pyrethroid. The photomicrographs of the glue line showed that the reduction in these values was mainly due to the penetration of preservative solutions into the wood structure (cell lumens and vessels or pores), impairing the anchoring of the adhesive.

RESUMO A madeira laminada colada (MLC) é um material compósito obtido a partir da colagem de lâminas de madeira dispostas com as fibras paralelas entre si. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do número de lâminas no comportamento mecânico de MLC de Toona ciliata produzidas com adesivo poliuretano de base vegetal. As vigas de MLC foram produzidas com lamelas nas dimensões de 6,0 x 1,5 x 120,0 cm, sendo confeccionadas 3 vigas por tratamento, os quais foram estruturalmente compostos por 5, 7 e 9 lâminas. Foi utilizado o adesivo poliuretano à base de óleo de mamona, sendo aplicada gramatura de 350 g m-². Para a caracterização tecnológica da madeira determinou-se a umidade na base seca, densidade aparente, caracterização química, resistência a compressão paralela às fibras, cisalhamento e os módulos de elasticidade (MOE) e ruptura (MOR) no ensaio de flexão estática. Enquanto para as vigas de MLC foram determinadas as propriedades de módulo de elasticidade (MOE), módulo de ruptura (MOR), resistência ao cisalhamento, delaminação e visualização da linha de cola por meio de fotomicrografias das amostras de madeira laminada colada. Os resultados mostraram que as vigas com 5 lâminas apresentaram valores semelhantes a madeira sólida. O aumento do número de lâminas, proporcionou menores valores para rigidez e resistência das vigas. As fotomicrografias comprovaram a qualidade da colagem e os valores satisfatórios para resistência ao cisalhamento e à delaminação, indicando a viabilidade da espécie em estudo para situações com alto teor de umidade.

ABSTRACT The glued laminated timber (glulam) is a composite material obtained from the bonding of wood laminae arranged with parallel fibers put together. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the influence of the number of laminae on the mechanical behavior of glulam of Toona ciliata produced with vegetable-based polyurethane adhesive. The glulam beams were produced with lamellae in the dimensions of 6.0 x 1.5 x 120.0 cm, with 3 beams being made per treatment, which were structurally composed by 5, 7 and 9 laminae. The polyurethane adhesive based on castor oil was used, applying a grammage of 350 g m-². For the technological characterization of the wood the moisture in the dry base, bulk density, chemical characterization, compressive strength parallel to the fibers, shear and modulus of elasticity (MOE) and rupture (MOR) in the static bending test. While the properties of modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), shear strength, delamination and visualization of the glue line through photomicrographs of the laminated wood samples were determined for glulam beams. The results showed that the beams with 5 laminae presented values similar to solid wood. The increase in the number of laminae provided lower values for stiffness and strength of the beams. The photomicrographs showed the quality of the bonding and the satisfactory values for shear strength and delamination, indicating the viability of the species under study for situations with high moisture content.

ABSTRACT Wood is a natural material that presents a great variation of properties. Many treatments have been developed in order to extend the service life of wood products. Nowadays, products with low toxicity and economic viability are a challenge to researchers. Nanotechnology has been indicated as a solution to this issue, since wood preservatives can be utilized in low concentration, promoting satisfactory results in terms of protection with no color changes. The main goal of this review is to present nanotechnology advances on wood protection. Self-cleaning surfaces, scratch and weathering resistance, and biocides properties have been achieved through nanoparticles (NPs) applications. Studies evaluating the performance of NPs from silver (Ag), boron (B), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), zinc oxide (ZnO), zinc borate (B2O6Zn3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) on wood protections have reported promising findings. Tests performed against termites, rot, mold and stain fungi, and UV degradation have demonstrated that some biocides have their properties improved in nanoscale. Controlled release and encapsulation technologies are another important matter once it can increase the effectiveness of wood treatments. NPs risk assessment for human health and the environment are still incipient. Despite of that, some products as nanozinc oxide (nanoZnO) and titanium dioxide (nanoTiO2) present encouraging potential. NanoZnO and NanoTiO2 have been reported as promising antifungals, antibacterials, and antiviral agents; beyond theirs biocides properties, low ecotoxicity impacts to the environment are expected. Based on this review, we consider that wood treatments based on NPs may play an important role in the next generation of wood protection systems.

RESUMO O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar o método Neuroevolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) para ajustar os pesos e a topologia de redes neurais artificiais (RNAs) na estimação da altura de árvores em povoamento clonais de eucalipto, bem como comparar com as estimativas obtidas por um modelo hipsométrico de regressão. Para a estimativa da altura total das árvores (Ht), pelas RNAS e pelo modelo de regressão, utilizou-se variáveis diâmetro à 1,3 m de altura (dap) e a altura dominante (Hd). As RNAs foram ajustadas e aplicadas no sistema computacional NeuroForest, variando o tamanho da população inicial (parâmetro do algoritmo genético) e a densidade das conexões iniciais. As estimativas da altura total das árvores obtidas com o emprego de RNA e pelo modelo de regressão foram avaliadas com base no coeficiente de correlação, no gráfico de dispersão dos erros percentuais, no histograma de frequência percentual dos erros percentuais e na raiz do erro quadrado médio percentual (Root Mean Square Error - RMSE). A configuração de tamanho de população 300 e densidade inicial das conexões de 0,1 obteve a maior correlação e o menor RMSE%. Foram encontradas várias configurações de RNA com estatísticas superiores ao modelo hipsométrico de regressão. A metodologia NEAT pode ser utilizada para a estimação da altura de árvores em povoamento clonais de eucalipto.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the method of neuroevolution of augmenting topologies (NEAT) to adjust the weights and the topology of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the estimation of tree height in a clonal population of eucalyptus, and compare with estimates obtained by a hypsometric regression model. To estimate the total tree height (Ht), the RNAs and the regression model, we used as variables a diameter of 1.3 m height (dbh) and the dominant height (Hd). The RNAs were adjusted and applied to the computer system NeuroForest, varying the size of the initial population (the genetic algorithm parameter) and the density of initial connections. Estimates of the total height of the trees obtained with the use of RNA and the regression model were evaluated based on the correlation coefficient, the percentage of errors scatter plot, the percentage frequency histogram of percentage errors, and the root mean square error (root mean square error - RMSE). Various settings which resulted in superior statistics to the hypsometric regression model were found. Connections had the highest correlation and the lowest RMSE% with a population size value of 300 and an initial density of 0.1 RNA. The NEAT methodology proved effective in estimating the height of trees in clonal population of eucalyptus.
